Science, Superstition, or Bollywood?

NDTV Imagine’s new reality show, “Raaz Pichhle Janam Ka” has been going on the air from 7 December 2009 at 9:30 p.m. and as a daily prime timeslot from Monday to Thursday. The show is based on Past Life Regression Therapy (PLRT), where some Bollywood celebrities like Shahrukh Khan, Sushmita Sen, Sanjay Dutt, Karishma Kapoor , Celina Jaitely, Shekhar Suman, and Monica Bedi will appear with other common people to subject themselves in PLRT. According to news source, Dr. Trupti Jain, the PLRT therapist of the reality show claims that she will use a meditative technique to take people back in time to rid them of their present-day fears, phobias, and physical ailments by finding their roots in their previous lives.
The idea of Past Life Regression is based on Hindu philosophy. In Bhagwat Gita, it is told that the soul can never be cut into pieces by any weapon, nor can he be burned by fire, nor moistened by water, nor withered by the wind. According to this theory, the ‘atma’ or soul takes rebirth or reincarnation, as people often leave their old cloths to wear a new one. The ancient Indian Yoga philosopher Patanjali told about the soul being burdened with the accumulation of impressions (samskara) of karmas from previous existence. He advocates the practice of yoga meditation for alleviating the soul from such interminable encumbrances.
The Buddhist concept of Nirvana works along similar lines. The main motto of Nirvana is to stop this reincarnation.
Greco-Semitic religions do not believe in a past life. These religions believe that humans are only born once and only die once and that there is no endless cycle of life and death and rebirth, an idea inherent in reincarnation theory. These religions also believe that after death, we face final judgment, meaning that there is no second chance, like there is in reincarnation and karma, to live a better life. You get one shot at life and living it according to God’s plan; and that is it.
The idea of rebirth and reincarnation was introduced to the West through theosophy. Madame H.P. Blavatsky, co-founder of the Theosophical Society, introduced these ideas to the Western world. But much before the formation of Theosophical Society, Allan Kardec, a French spiritualist, wrote about reincarnation and karma in his book, The Book of the Spirits (1857). But the first person to use regression as a therapy was probably Dr Denys Kelsey.
A book co-authored with Joan Grant, Kelsey's Many Lifetimes (1967) is the first book on PLRT and focuses more on the therapeutic aspect of the technique rather than on stories of relived experiences.
Practitioners of PLRT use methods of hypnosis for inducing patients to regress to their past lives and identify the root of their present problems. This is the first phase (the 'realistic-cathartic' stage according to Jungian psychotherapist, Roger J. Woolger). The next step ('symbolic-archetypal') is for the patient to project the present himself/herself onto a past personality. The third step is to come to terms with what has been relived through regression in this 'integral-mystical' stage. However, the therapy proves to be beneficial only when the patient is able to accept the past trauma and is ready to progress beyond that. If the patient does not accept that past trauma, the therapy fails.
It is highly debatable if there is any scientific basis of this process, though the experiences described by the ‘subjects’ may be ideas hiding within their sub-conscious mind.
NDTV Imagine may use this therapy in a reality show to increase their TRP, but I have some doubts about the truthfulness of this method:
1) Why does no one who subjects himself or herself to this therapy ever finds himself or herself as an animal or an insect or a bird or even a plant? Hindu reincarnation theory states that the atma can travel through different ‘yonis’ or species.
2) If we take it, then, as a hypothesis that humans reincarnate into humans only, then how does the population of humans increase from day-to-day? Even today, we find the birth rate is higher than the death rate.
3) In the show aired on 7th December 2009, therapist Trupti Jain asked the’subject,’ who had allegedly lost her past life in a plane crash in 1966, if there was a watch inside the plane near the dead body. How could Dr.Jain know that there would be a watch there inside the plane near the dead body?
4) Ravi Kishan, the host of the reality show, claims on the screen that no hypnosis is used for the programme, but viewers witnessed Dr. Jain hypnotize the ‘subject’ to apply her therapy.

Same as per Newton :- "Energy neither be created nor be destroyed , it's transfer from one form to another"

2> The main motto of Nirvana is to stop this reincarnation. (Didn't get properly this line, will you plz explain briefly ?)

3> for this point,
If we take it, then, as a hypothesis that humans reincarnate into humans only,
>>No, as per Karma we will get another soul, not sure as human ,may be cat or dog.

>>As per geeta : (2nd chapter 22 sloka)
vāsāḿsi jīrṇāni yathā vihāya

navāni gṛhṇāti naro 'parāṇi

tathā śarīrāṇi vihāya jīrṇāny

anyāni saḿyāti navāni dehī
mean:-As a person puts on new garments, giving up old ones, the soul similarly accepts new material bodies, giving up the old and useless ones.

@ Amaresh: “The Buddha described Nirvana as the perfect peace of the state of mind that is free from craving, anger and other afflictive states (kilesas). The subject is at peace with the world, has compassion for all and gives up obsessions and fixations. This peace is achieved when the existing volitional formations are pacified, and the conditions for the production of new ones are eradicated. In Nibbana the root causes of craving and aversion have been extinguished such that one is no longer subject to human suffering (dukkha) or further states of rebirths in samsara.” ( Source: Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nirvana)
About reincarnation, I possess the same idea with you, that is why I have asked: “Why does no one who subjects himself or herself to this therapy ever finds himself or herself as an animal or an insect or a bird or even a plant? Hindu reincarnation theory states that the atma can travel through different ‘yonis’ or species. “

Dear Apa,
Thanks for your point of view and your concerns..I absolutely agree to your points...but apart from your analysis and not going much into the hypnotism act of Jain, I don't understand what we, India as a nation want to convey to the world by airing such shows, at this point of time?? Are we interested to re install the image of India as a country of snakes, monks and full with people brooding over their past lives...a society which prefers to shift the responsibility as an outcome of karma? I wonder why people invest so much money to spread such a message? Having said that I'm not judgemental about people who love to be there on the show to seek about their past lives..they may have got some sense of lack of confidence or crisis of identity which has led to horrible experiences for them and made life difficult for them..but is the media playing a right role by tracing the cause of their difficult lives in their past lives?? It's just so unbelievable..has no reason behind it..and no scientific bases..why should at all the media be allowed to show such a programme which pulls us back?? How could the fourth pillar be so weak as to work towards making people more superstitious in a time when you need to take all the responsibilities as a people and as a nation for each action of yours, may be personal or political???I'm just feeling disgusted and disturbed to know that such types of programmes are dominating our channels in today's time.
Love,
Hiranmayee

I fully agree with you. I have seen the show with free mind. In my opinion, the reality show does not appear to be a live one. They have aired a drama short of thing as usual. The PLRT therapist Dr, Trupti Jain was shown as if using the techniques of hypnosis although Mr. Ravi kishan the host of the show had claimed that techniques of Hypnosis is not used. This is a part of the drama, where as it was not warranted.

You have examined the things in its entirety and reached true conclusions. I appreciate.

In this Brahmand , every thing is possible,,, all are connected with each other (at beginig and at end, may be in between)because they made of one only,,,

Sach ka sakshatkaar hai,
Nast hota jo aakaar hai
Brahmand naswar hai, anast hai
Nast hota jo vikaar hai
Chak'kro ka bas chak'ker hai
Parivartan bas sakaar hai..

What is most important is ...out instruments,, our sense's limitations....there is no end to smallest and largest existance...

You need oxygen,,, water to survive but fire can burn you,,, you will die in H2s atmosphere,,, but there are,,, which will die as touch with air or water and there are, which live and grow in H2s / fire atmosphere...

This topic is also like Brahmand,,, few are having proof and misslions does not have,, and endless things,,, we don't know???????????

Your doubts are rational,Dr. Sarojini. Our reasoning power and intelligence have certain limitations and so these metaphysical concepts are never absolute and always open for controversy and contradictions.

i agree with you why subject of this person of this therapy were not in other form other than human, that is the question Bhagvat Gita never says that the soul of human does not go in the body of other creatures,if you had studied or listened Bhagvat in that there are examples of soul of human goes in other creatures than human,i have heard the examples of reincarnation, yes that is the question why the population remains same? why it is increasing?

My most Revered Guru of my previous life His Holiness Maharaj Sahab, 3rd Spiritual Head of Radhasoami Faith had revealed this secret to me during trance like state.
HE told me, "Tum Sarkar Sahab Ho" (You are Sarkar Sahab). Sarkar Sahab was one of the most beloved disciple of His Holiness Maharj Sahab. Sarkar Sahab later on became Fourth Spiritual Head of Radhasoami Faith
Since I don't have any direct realization of it so I can not claim the extent of its correctness. But it seems to be correct. During my previous birth I wanted to sing the song of 'Infinite' but I could not do so then since I had to leave the mortal frame at a very early age. But through the unbounded Grace and Mercy of my most Revered Guru that desire of my past birth is being fulfilled now.

This is my second comment: One has to understand,,,,and try to find proof,,, fear of various levels are seen in people,,,,wear of water,, fear of fire,,, fear of some faces,,, fear of wind etc etc.... how these comes... see history of the person,,, no thing happened in life,,, even this fear is from chieldhood,,,,try to find answers yourself ....I HAVE ANOTHER THEORY OF THIS,,, WHICH I WILL RIGHT IN MY BOOK,,, I DON'T KNOW WHEN,,,

My final words are ,,, try to overcome these ifficulties,,,which my be shadow of your past / last birth,,,,

SUPERSTITIONS shall not be there,,, if there is no self proof... because fear and odd / magical happenings are individual based (THIS I WILL PROOVE IN MY THEORY)

I have not seen “Raaz Pichhle Janam Ka”; I think it is not available in my country.
Your doubts about NDTV Imagine which you listed in four points are 100% valid points. As it is interesting topic, gathering show business celebrities is not unusual. May be tomorrow, a group will appear with the claim that he has constructed a time tunnel, where people can go back to past to rectify their mistakes.
I think it is not written in Bhagwat Gita that it possible for anyone to find his previous birth, which he was in previous life.
There are different faiths, according to Muslim, Christian, & Jews, soul take birth and then remain alive for ever. This world is examination hall and after death, soul is transferred to hell or paradise according to his deeds in the world.
In Hindu’s faith there is faith of rebirth or reincarnation until after several examinations individual attains mukti, but certainly no one can know who he was in past life.
Hypnotism or mesmerism was introduced by DR. Mesmer & psychoanalysis was introduced by Freud and is very relevant to each other.
By psychoanalysis old bad incidents are traced out which patient forget and causing mental illness, and eradicated by recalling these incidents from subconscious to conscious or using Hypnotism to get quick results.
But it is for present life not previous life. Also there is lot of fantasy associated with Hypnotism.
Similarly yoga experts claim that by practicing yoga, it is possible that expert can transfer his soul in another dead body to make him alive, even in dead animals and birds.
You will find this claim in every standard yoga book, but you will not find any yoga expert that could perform this act.
But TV program can be arranged; and by some tricks viewers can be deceived.
Yoga, Hypnotism, psychoanalysis is useful only up to certain limit, but their applications are highly exaggerated, so in the case of Past Life Regression Therapy (PLRT).

I too have my doubts, that is only because media has lost its credibility. I don't trust NDTV, even I found that strange her talking about the watch and Shekhar Suman's episode was a big act. past life regression has become a fad today. hypnosis is used by psychologists too but only when required not for fun it has serious repucussions if not done properly.

I fully agree. The sentiments expressed speak of the facts. It should
be a collective endeavour to raise voice against such not very healthy
practices. It is just making money and nothing else.

Hi Sarojini,

I agree with you! Though I do believe in karmas, reincarnation and a balance that God maintains. But somehow, I also believe that a lot of things happen in the same life - heaven and hell are virtual and actually a person witnesses heaven and hell in his/her current human life only. I have seen a few cases in my vicinity and this has led to this belief.

Talking about the show, definitely, there is a lot of drama involved. Apparently, it seems that the doctor can only go back into one of the past human life of the concerned person. Because I can recall in one of the cases, the past life was of 19th century..I do not completely recall the person's name though. That left a lot of confusions!

Irony is that we Indians struggle in our lives in many different ways. It could be to do with the health, monetary issues, relationships and lot of other aspects of life. After certain attempts, we tend to give in blaming it all on our karm, kismat and all that. And at that time, we like to resort to others for help. This is the reason why so many gurus are popular in India.

Increasingly we are moving to a complex lifestyle wherein we do not appreciate the basic joys of life and are always condemning one or the other situation, person etc.

My point here is that even though we are not sure whether the show is genuine, the viewership would be very high for such a show. This is because everyone is actually trying to answer the many querries that are going on his/her life in this way.

What a intelligent programme to fool the audience !!!
THE therapist is a modern tantrik BABA.
your theories about soul and reincarnation are not clear then then how can one believe about such things.first makeup theories then prove it then apply its application.
all your assumptions contradictory.
people want some mysteries, some reasons for their current life.WHY?
they with foolish questions? Why am this or that.its the same question like why a sphere is sphere.answer-it is sphere so it is called sphere.
nonsense question ,nonsense answer.
why not someone tell that i was born about in 10,000 BC and i was a prehistoric MAN/APE in africa or america.

some my questions about souls whether in any religion are:
1.does soul have any identity?since energy has no typical identity.(energy example)
2.can soul fly or travel in vaccum?
3.does only humans have soul or any other things like plant have souls?
4.population is increasing.so ,where does new souls come from?
5.if we send a man and woman to mars, does child will take birth?ofcourse with a soul? from where its soul come from.
6.how come one remember its previous life, since our body is new and though soul is same but its only a enery form.energy don't remember what was its past form.
7.if its reliable enough that one can tell its past life truthfully, then it has an application in criminlogy.

and,and many more........
list is endless and no one has any answer except some personal justification of somebody based on his/her personal assumption.

why we always want to look in past or want to know future?
why don't we see our present?

why rich people and celebrities were born in Europe in 19th century and why ordinary looking folks were born in villages in india in their past life. I can understand Dr Tripthi Jain's intentions to make money out of people's superstition. But why is a respectable TV Channel like NDTV is broadcasting such programs. Please don't forget media's responsibility towards bettering the society. This is much worse than people of Tamil Nadu worshipping film actors like gods.
